Seattle Sounders vs DC United Match Preview

Seattle Sounders sealed a comfortable 3-1 win over Colorado Rapids in the previous outing.


Goals from Clint Dempsey and Will Bruin gave the Sounders a first-half lead. Dominique Badji pulled a goal for Rapids in the second period but Dempsey completed the rout with his brace completed in the 85th minute. On the other hand, DC United succumbed to their third loss on the trot following a 4-2 defeat away at Dallas. Ian Harkes bagged the opener for United in the 30th minute, but four goals in the space of 14 minutes on either side of half time put Dallas 4-1 ahead. Deshorn Brown added the second for United in the 57th minute but it was no more than a consolation goal.

Seattle Sounders have had a mixed run in Major League Soccer of late, and this has pushed them outside of the playoff positions into seventh place. Their home form, however, makes for good reading with 10 points gained out of the last 15. Meanwhile, DC have had a dismal record over the course of the season, and they find themselves rockbottom of the Eastern Conference. Seattle Sounders boss confident of US Open Cup progress

Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer is ready to play with a weakened squad on Tuesday night when his team take on Portland Timbers in the fourth round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.


The match will have a different outlook to the teams’ clash two weeks ago when the Sounders ran 1-0 victors in their conference.

The Sounders will have to cope without the presence of Clint Dempsey, who is suspended for the game while defensive duo Joevin Jones and Roman Torres will also not feature due to their participation at the World Cup Qualifiers with Trinidad and Tobago and Panama, respectively. United States forward Jordan Morris only returned from the international camp earlier in the week, and he could also miss out on the Cup clash.

In spite of the absence of several key players, Schmetzer is prepared to line up his best possible squad against Portland Timbers, who could take the Cup as a practice game for their rookie players. Timbers boss Caleb Porter hinted last weekend that he could rest his main players to focus on the Western Conference, and this could in turn see a reserve team make their appearance on the night. Brian Schmetzer Speaks about Recovering Seattle Sounders’ Form

Seattle Sounders have been going to a disastrous run of form in the 2017 MLS campaign, and the club has lost their last three games to drop into 10th place of the Western Conference table.


The club have already fallen 12 points behind table leaders Sporting Kansas City after having played just 11 matches. There is a lot of pressure on manager Brian Schmetzer following this poor start to the campaign, despite coming into the 2017 season as the defending MLS Cup champions. One of the factors for the club’s poor performance has been the frequent unavailability of star players like Clint Dempsey.

The former Fulham forward has been amongst the top scorers at the club with four goals. Yet, he has not been playing consistently. The goal in the 3-0 win over LA Galaxy was the first of the campaign for Seattle Sounders. Seattle Sounders launches VR experience from their 2017 MLS Cup triumph

On December 10 of 2016, Toronto FC played against Seattle Sounders for the finals of the 2016 MLS Cup in a match that concluded with a goal-less scoreboard as neither teams were able to score a single goal throughout the entirety of the game and the winner had to be decided through a penalty session.


Seattle Sounders was the side that emerged victorious after what was an intense and dramatic penalty kick-off and Brian Schmetzer along with his squad marked their name in the history-books of the MLS outfit as they had never been able to lift the MLS Cup before, this is and was their very 1st MLS Cup that the American club has lifted.

It was and continues to be a historic date for Seattle Sounders and the MLS club has recently unveiled a way for supporters of the club and for anyone at all to kind off experience what it’s like to see them fulfilling this memorable accomplishment. Dempsey to train

Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey have received medical clearance that allows him to train normally with his team.


The player had to end his season prematurely last year as he was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.

Seattle Sounders did not want to take any risk with the player and allowed him to take time off from the team and focus on his treatment.

However, the player has now received medical approval to train again with the team as it appears that his heartbeat has returned to normal.

Clint Dempsey has returned to the first team since Tuesday and has even taken part in the preseason training.

Dempsey out for the season

Seattle Sounders director Garth Lagerwey has stated that Clint Dempsey will be out for the rest of the season because of health issues.


This statement has put an end to speculations that the player could be back before the end of the year.

Garth Lagerwey confirms that Clint Dempsey has a health condition that they have been monitoring for some months now. Tests have shown that the forward has an irregular heartbeat that needs to be addressed now before it turns into a dangerous condition.

Garth Lagerwey said that Seattle Sounders still believe that the player will be back in the team next year. However, he added that they would not be putting any pressure on the player as his health is more important that the club. He admitted that it would be a big loss for the team but at the moment they need to focus on the treatment and ensure that there is no danger to the player’s health.
