Seattle Sounders back in for Paraguayan midfielder

Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders are once again being linked with a summer move for Dynamo Kiev’s Derlis Gonzalez.

The MLS Cup winners had walked away from a deal due to Dynamo’s transfer fee demands earlier in the month, but it appears that the move is back on track. Paraguay radio station ABC Cardinal suggests that Gonzalez will link up with the American outfit following Dynamo’s Champions League two-legged tie against Young Boys. The Ukrainian giants clinched a 3-1 victory at home in the third qualifying round, and they will hope to maintain their lead in order to head into playoffs next month.

Should the report be true, the Paraguay international could be a game-changing signing for the Sounders, who have enjoyed a good run of form which has propelled them up to fifth in the standings. The 23-year-old has often featured as a left-sided midfielder, but he is also capable of taking up an attacking position. Gonzalez joined Dynamo from Swiss giants Basel back in 2015, and he has since bagged five goals in 35 league outings. Continue reading “Seattle Sounders back in for Paraguayan midfielder”

Seattle Sounders vs DC United Match Preview

Seattle Sounders sealed a comfortable 3-1 win over Colorado Rapids in the previous outing.

Goals from Clint Dempsey and Will Bruin gave the Sounders a first-half lead. Dominique Badji pulled a goal for Rapids in the second period but Dempsey completed the rout with his brace completed in the 85th minute. On the other hand, DC United succumbed to their third loss on the trot following a 4-2 defeat away at Dallas. Ian Harkes bagged the opener for United in the 30th minute, but four goals in the space of 14 minutes on either side of half time put Dallas 4-1 ahead. Deshorn Brown added the second for United in the 57th minute but it was no more than a consolation goal.

Seattle Sounders have had a mixed run in Major League Soccer of late, and this has pushed them outside of the playoff positions into seventh place. Their home form, however, makes for good reading with 10 points gained out of the last 15. Meanwhile, DC have had a dismal record over the course of the season, and they find themselves rockbottom of the Eastern Conference. With five defeats out of five away from home, they could expect another tough outing at CenturyLink Field. Continue reading “Seattle Sounders vs DC United Match Preview”

Seattle Sounders suffer unfortunate defeat to New York City FC

Major League Cup champions Seattle Sounders fell to their seventh defeat of the season following a 2-1 loss to New York City FC over the weekend.

The game was played in soggy conditions in the modified Yankee Stadium, but Sounders managed to score first via a well-timed finish from Cristian Roldan. With the game going into the half at 1-0, Seattle looked good money to maintain their lead until a controversial penalty was awarded in the 52nd minute. World Cup winner David Villa tried to get New York City FC back into game, and his thrust into the box from the left side saw him topple over Oniel Fisher, who made a well-timed challenge.

However, the referee chose to give the opposition the advantage as he deemed Villa was fouled to the ground. The former Barcelona man eventually converted the penalty to bag the 50th goal of his New York City FC career, and this provided them the impetus to push forward for the win. Both Seattle and New York had played through steady downpour of rain over the course of the game, and the deciding goal came from none other than Villa himself who timed his shot from the left towards the far post beating Sounders keeper Stefan Frei. SOUNDERS CHASE PLAYOFF SPOT

Seattle Sounders are set to clash with Colorado Rapids as both Major League Soccer sides chase playoff spots. The league is set to observe the international break before both sides clash on Tuesday in Colorado.

The Rapids are hoping to continue their fine run after their 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo. That victory helped them three points off the playoff spots. Getting a crucial victory on the road as this can be difficult but it would be very helpful ahead of the second half of the season. Continue reading “SOUNDERS CHASE PLAYOFF SPOT”

Seattle Sounders boss confident of US Open Cup progress

Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer is ready to play with a weakened squad on Tuesday night when his team take on Portland Timbers in the fourth round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

The match will have a different outlook to the teams’ clash two weeks ago when the Sounders ran 1-0 victors in their conference.

The Sounders will have to cope without the presence of Clint Dempsey, who is suspended for the game while defensive duo Joevin Jones and Roman Torres will also not feature due to their participation at the World Cup Qualifiers with Trinidad and Tobago and Panama, respectively. United States forward Jordan Morris only returned from the international camp earlier in the week, and he could also miss out on the Cup clash.

In spite of the absence of several key players, Schmetzer is prepared to line up his best possible squad against Portland Timbers, who could take the Cup as a practice game for their rookie players. Timbers boss Caleb Porter hinted last weekend that he could rest his main players to focus on the Western Conference, and this could in turn see a reserve team make their appearance on the night. FIRE TROUNCE SEATTLE SOUNDERS 4-1

MLS heavyweights Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders clashed in a league game where Fire came out victorious.

The first half was rather contentious but the hosts pulled away after the break to win by a 4-1 margin at Toyota Park over the weekend.

Fire started their rout in the 25th minute. NemanjaNikolic stepped up to take the spot kick after the referee awarded them. The player converted it to send the fans in a joyous mood but Sounders’ Clint Dempsey cut the celebrations short.

The US soccer star equalized within three minutes of the opener, sending a nice curl as the ball entered the net. Chicago reclaimed the lead after the break as David Accam scored to make it 2-1. Luis Solignac added another to take the game too far a distance for the guests. Continue reading “FIRE TROUNCE SEATTLE SOUNDERS 4-1”
