Major League Soccer (MLS) giants Seattle Sounders have re-signed goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland. The 27-year-old shot stopper has penned a two-year deal through to the end of the 2023 MLS season with the option of the 2024 MLS season. His signing was announced by Seattle Sounders earlier this week.

Cleveland was temporarily a free agent before his return to Seattle Sounders was confirmed on Wednesday. On his return to Sounders, Lagerwey said that they are delighted to bring the shot stopper back to the club  after his good form last season. Lagerwey is the Seattle Sounders general manager.

Speaking further via a statement on the Sounders website, Lagerwey said that Cleveland has proved that he can perform at the highest level whenever he’s needed and that they are delighted to have another member of their talented roster return to the club ahead of the 2022 MLS season.

Sounders goalkeeper Cleveland signed for the club just before the 2020 MLS season as the second choice behind Stefan Frei, the first choice Sounders goalkeeper for a long time. He had spent the previous three seasons at Chicago Fire. Cleveland played in the Sounders goal for a  long time last season due to the knee injury suffered by Frei. He featured in 15 games for Seattle Sounders last year, keeping four clean sheets and making 47 saves in the process. He wasable to help maintain the good defensive record at Sounders amongst the teams in the Western Conference.

Cleveland was a standout player at collegiate level in the colours of Dartmouth before he turned professional. The Sounders shot stopper was drafted into the Chicago Fire squad during the second round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft and he went on to play five times for the club during the 2018 MLS season. Ex-Stanford University standout Andrew Thomas, Stefan Cleveland and Stefan Frei make up the goalkeepers group at Seattle Sounders.
