Gonzalo Pineda is expected to return to Seattle Sounders after his failed bid to land the D. C. United job in the MLS (Major League Soccer). Gonzalo Pineda is the assistant coach at Seattle Sounders who reached the MLS Cup playoffs final before they were beaten well by Columbus Crew SC. Seattle Sounders were the defending champions and they failed in the bid to win the competition once again. Gonzalo Pineda, 38, became the assistant coach at Seattle Sounders two years after he retired from football at the same club. The Mexican ended his playing career at Seattle Sounders in 2015 before he was named the assistant coach at the club in 2017. He was hoping to make the step up in his coaching career by taking the D.C. United job but things have not worked out well for him in this regard as reported by the Washington Post last week.
Pineda was offered the coaching job at D.C. United but he was unable to agree a deal with the MLS outfit. Brian Schmetzer has agreed a new deal with Seattle Sounders and that led to questions over the future of Gonzalo Pineda and whether thecoaching staff at the club will remain intact ahead of the 2021 season.
For the D.C. United job, Gonzalo Pineda was one of the finalists alongside the likes of ex-United States international Steve Cherundolo, New York Red Bulls coach Chris Armas and former United States manager Jill Ellis. In the end, Pineda didn’t get the D.C. United job but it’s only a matter of time before he lands his desired position of being the main man rather than the second-in-command. He has been the assistant coach at Seattle for four seasons and has been involved in three MLS Cup finals. Gonzalo Pineda is also under consideration from Mexican clubs but nothing concrete has come out of the interest in him.
