The hierarchy of Seattle Sounders has made clear that Sigi Schmid will not be given the axe and he would keep on working as the head coach of the senior team for another season.
Seattle could not produce the expected results in the recently finished MLS season as they finished at the 4th position in the Western Conference and then got knocked out from the playoffs losing to FC Dallas, a club which they would have backed themselves to beat.
It was a pretty close playoff tie actually. Both the legs ended up with the same score line of 2-1 with both the sides winning one each and it came down to penalty shoot outs eventually where Dallas proved better.
Compared to how the previous year had gone for the Sounders where they had managed to clinch two trophies, it was a sort of failure, this 2015 season and there was a general feeling that Schmid would be made the scapegoat for that.
But, that did not turn out to be the case as Garth Lagerwey, one of the owners of the club, told the reporters yesterday that not too much of thought was put into Schmid’s position in the board meeting and it was unanimously decided that the coach should continue as he had been doing his job well. There had been speculation that Schmid would be sacked after one fan placed a bet with StanJames that Schmid would walk.
In the words of Lagerwey, “I think I should put an end to all the rumours that are circling around regarding Sigi. He is somebody who is highly respected here at Seattle and has got the support and faith of all. He is going to remain in charge of the team. Honestly speaking, we did not have any lengthy discussion on Sigi. We were of the same view that he should continue.”
